This article is going to be a running feed of Super Smash Bros. (Title Pending) for Nintendo Switch news, rumors and updates. The most recent news will be on top. Super Smash Bros. Invitational 2018
Nintendo announced that there will be a Super Smash Bros. tournament at E3 2018. The tournament is the first confirmed reveal date for Smash Switch gameplay. Many community members assume we will see some teasers or trailers before that time, but no one knows for sure.
Who will be playing at the Smash Bros. E3 tournament? Invites have not yet been revealed, but it's safe to assume some top Smash 4 players and top Melee players will be in attendence.
Will it be 4 player with items on? It might be since that what formate the gameplay was in previous Nintendo event tournaments. The one hope we have for a bit more of a competitive format is that Nintendo's E3 page refers to playing "for glory" which is an homage to their competitive online one vs one format.
What is the date of the Smash Bros. Switch E3 tournament? E3 runs on June 12-14, 2018. It is unannounced what date and time the actual tournament will take place.

The official YouTube Channel for Super Smash Bros. released this standalone video immediately after the Nintendo Direct.
"Super Smash Bros. is coming to Nintendo Switch!"
Can we take a moment to admire how great that release trailer was? The fade to darkness. The subtle flicker in the Inkling's eye. The look of fear and awe on her face. Not only did Nintendo catch everyone by surprise with this announcement, but they also managed to nail the reveal.
Character Updates on Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch
New Characters in Smash for Switch
Inkling - the reveal trailer for Smash Bros. for Switch showcases the Inklings from Splatoon as the newest character addition to the Super Smash Bros. series. No gameplay footage has been released at this time. This addition makes perfect sense and has long been suspected as a top choice character addition. Adding Inklings to Smash gives Nintendo a great avenue to promote one of their most successful new pieces of IP.
Character Updates in Smash for Switch
Link - the reveal trailer also showed that Link has been updated to match his Breath of the Wild art style. It is unknown if this visual update is simply a skin or a change to his entire character.
New Character Rumors and Speculation
Crash Bandicoot - the same Direct that announced Smash Bros. on Switch also announced the release of Crash Bandicoot Trilogy on the Nintendo Switch. A longtime fan favorite, many players have hoped to see this addition in the past.
Mario with Cappy - Super Mario Odyssey is a huge hit for the Switch and Cappy is the fantastic new game mechanic introduced. There is speculation we could see Mario updated to incorporate Cappy into his Smash moveset.
What is the Name of the Smash Bros. Switch Game?
Here is an excerpt from Nintendo's official announcement post on Nintendo.com:
- Nintendo Switch Super Smash Bros. (working title): The Super Smash Bros. series comes to Nintendo Switch in 2018. The teaser trailer featured recognizable faces like Mario, Link and the Inklings from the Splatoon series.
Is Smash on Switch a new game (Smash 5) or an Enhanced Port?
At this time it is unknown if we are getting a completely new Smash game or if this is an enhanced port of Smash 4 - or a combination of Smash 4 and Smash Bros. 3DS. Whatever it is, we're going to buy it and you already can get it at a discount if you preorder it on Amazon.
A survey on Twitter shows that the majority of the competitive Smash player community believes this is an entirely new Smash Bros. game.

While an "Ultimate Edition" or "Deluxe" port of Smash 4 has long been considered the likely result for Smash Switch, there are a few reasons to believe that this may very well be a new addition to the series.
New Smash Bros. Logo, New Music, New Character Art
The Smash teaser video was short, but that didn't stop the community from noticing a few interesting pieces of news. The combination of a new logo and new music (which in the past has signified a new version of the game) give this the feeling of a big update.

Is Sakurai Involved with this new Smash game?
Yes. Soon after the announcement at the Direct, Sakurai ReTweeted the video, leading to quick speculation that he was involved. Then he followed it up with confirmation that hehas been working on the new Smash game "day after day."
— 桜井 政博 (@Sora_Sakurai) March 8, 2018
Sakurai's follow up Tweet translates to "While we haven't gotten to the point where we can announce the game's title, I've been working on the title in silence day after day. Please look forward to new information and when the title goes on sale!!" - Sakurai
On Twitter, @PushDustin, the "Biggest Smash nerd in the world" asserts that Sakurai has been working on this game for 2+ years since his "breather" and that this puts in the right ballpark for the development time needed to develop a new version in the series.
