Smash Ultimate Character Analysis: Chrom (Follow-Up And Why I'm No Longer Interested in Maining Him)

Jak8 - November 13, 2018

So this is a follow-up to the analysis of Chrom I made before (where I said he was definitely going to be better than Roy), however I figured I would make an update as to why I am no longer interested in maining Chrom (I'll still try him out, and if he ends up being really good, I might main him, but the way he's looking, he seems to be worse than Roy overall).

First off, I wanted to talk about Roy himself. Sure, in Smash 4 Roy may not have had the best potential of all the characters (that didn't stop me from maining him thougn), but in Ultimate, he looks REALLY good (granted, all the good players are saying he's top tier, and I just can't see that happening, as much as I want to). Roy got a lot of buffs all around to his character in addition to indirect buffs from the mechanics change, and suddenly Roy looks like an actual threat now! Good edge guarding both off-stage and on-stage, as well as good advantage as well as above-stage disadvantage, and overall just a solid character at many things.

But now let's talk about Chrom. Chrom has a balanced sword like Lucina so he loses the tippers Roy had. Sure, for the most part, this IS a good change, but Roy actually had a decent usage for the sour spots to combo and even sometimes kill (no joke, I sometimes kill with sour spot back-air offstage, and I swear sour spot down air is actually really potent in Smash 4). And not to mention... the up-b. Chrom's up-b is basically Ike's Aether, as I'm sure you know. As far as I can see, it has the EXACT SAME (but don't quote me on that) height that Roy gets with his recovery, but Roy also gets horizontal recovery with his up-b that Chrom does not get at all, thus limiting how far Chrom can go out to edge guard. Not to mention that I've heard some people saying that Chrom has better frame data, but unless I've analyzed it wrong, they have the EXACT SAME frame data on all moves (even up-b, which starts on frame 9). Chrom loses on-stage KO power with Aether that Roy had (sure, he has off-stage KO power when the opponent is at 0, but so do Ike, Dedede, and Kirby with their up-b's) AND up-b can actually be read pretty easily for Chrom off-stage since Chrom needs to be in the stock off-stage to get that KO with it, otherwise it's pretty much guaranteed loss with that option; and since Chrom can't go out very far to edge guard without practically asking for an SD, he's pretty much going to be recovered high against if he goes low, and recovered low against if he goes high. AND due to how Chrom is easily gimped with his up-b being bad at recovery like it is, if Chrom is hit while edge guarding offstage, it's over for Chrom and he won't make it back to the stage.

Now, if Chrom can maintain ground really well, then Chrom will be a great character like Little Mac. But also like Little Mac, if he happens to get caught offstage in just the wrong way, it will REALLY set him back. And that's why now I would rather main Roy than Chrom and why I won't main Chrom when the game comes out (unless he gets proven to be REALLY good, in which case I will try him out). Feel free to leave comments as to why you think Roy is better than Chrom or why you think Chrom is better than Roy, I'm just giving my own opinions here.
