Footstools and Ganondorf

Opana - May 2, 2017

As a disclaimer I'm not an experienced writer or blogger, and will be writing this via mobile.

Grounded Down Air is untechable

So anyway, to start I'd like to say I think using every practical tool available to you is important, even if said tool may be situational. Footstool combos with Ganondorf are certainly situational, but that doesn't mean they're not worth utilizing as should you recognize a situation they're applicable, it can massively swing a match in your favor. They're primarily set up with simply a Down Air(Dair), meaning there aren't going to be any real set ups in to it, and given it's start up frames of 16 and Ganondorf's jumpsquat of 7, it realistically won't be landed unless you get a hard punish or read. But that's a large part of playing Ganon, and something you'll grow more accustomed to as you play him.

So next I'd like to cover the execution of a Ganondorf footstool combo, with his most practical variant being Dair>Footstool>Dair, followed by either an aerial(most cases true), or a smash attack read. Below I'll list the steps I take in performing this, however keep in mind that I use the Wii U Pro Controller.

1. Short hop or full hop, and fast fall a Dair as close to the ground as you can.

2. Pay attention to where they pop up, as they can DI the dair. Try to reactively jump towards them to connect a footstool.

3. At lower percents, I mash the jump button(X) with light presses fast, and when I see the footstool connect I proceed.

4. Once I reach the apex of the footstool jump, I input a dair on the smash stick and fast fall it in to the ground with the control stick.

5. From here, you can connect an aerial, or if you'd like can pivot a smash to catch attacks and dodges.

6.To pivot forward smash them, run to either side of them, input a pivot at the appropriate distance, followed almost immediately by a forward smash on the smash stick. To pivot up smash, I run to either side followed by a pivot and pressing X(Jump), up on the control stick, and A all as one input.

These steps are assuming the dair is landed at lower percents, say 18%-30%. Beyond that, you may need to gain more height first with your initial grounded jump before you mash for a footstool. It may not be true as well, but rather a mixup that's dependent on them not air dodging, although the good news is you can likely frame trap them should they air dodge with aerials or wizkick.

Some potential situations you may land a Dair include:

  • Unsafe air dodges in to the ground
  • Attacks in to the ground
  • Hard whiff punishes
  • On a ledge getup or roll
  • On a roll or spot dodge
  • As a mixup between empty jumping and grabbing
  • If you read an opponents groumded approach or aerial jump in approach

A lot of these can have more to the situation, in general these are just rough ideas of where you can potentially land a Dair.

So that's about it, keep in mind this is largely from my own experience and there are probably other methods of doing things, but this is what works for me. I'd like to blog on other ideas if something comes to mind, if you'd like to hear something in particular tweet me @SmasherOpana and I'll see what I can do. Generally though I like to push the advantage state far and consider that a strong point, so things I discuss may be based around that.
