Glitch 3: A Rare Breed

Brosalina - May 2, 2017

The third iteration of the VGBC team’s super regional will be emanating from the hallowed halls of Xanadu this weekend. The same Maryland/Virginia regulars will be in attendance with plenty of new faces making their first appearances at Glitch (most notably TSM Zero and Captain Zack) and the unique dynamics of the varied tournament events leaves a lot of questions going into Saturday. However the guessing game that goes along with these tournaments is not the intent of this piece; instead I intend to focus on the efforts that go into running an event of this size and the importance of tournaments of this nature.

Glitch initially began as an attempt to showcase the forgotten customs meta and given the interest of the first large scale event since EVO 2015 (Was it really that long ago?) to run customs we saw attendees from up and down the east coast and around the world make the trip for what was at that point, a two day event. Glitch ended up having 255 unique entrants for singles was a sight to behold for a variety of reasons, most notably the size restrictions of the Xanadu venue itself. I have personally attended a 120 man Xanadu before and I can hardly fathom the tight quarters that would accompany doubling that figure. Despite the masses, the tournament went off without a hitch with CLG Void winning singles, low tiers, and customs and amassing himself quite the treasure chest of winnings

Flash forward six months and we witness the expansion of the Glitch series. The second event under the Glitch heading featured the same events as its predecessor but saw the inclusion of three new side events: Triples, Amiibos, and Brawl. Even more impressive though was the daunting task of taking such a large two day event and managing to compress it down to one. The VGBC was more than up to the task though and we saw a varied winners circle this time. Rvl Mr. E won singles, John Numbers won customs, and P1 Tweek claimed the low tier bracket victory.

With the most current version of the Glitch series occurring 96 hours away at the time of this writing I feel like it’s important to appreciate what makes Glitch so special: its uniqueness and the strong aura of just plain fun that comes along with some of the more interesting side events that occur along with traditional singles. The onus of top players at major events now is to be zeroed in on succeeding in singles, and with good reason, but it’s still nice from time to time and appreciate what makes this game so great for all of us. We have all had moments deep into practice sessions where someone busts out the Ganon or late night fests with too many people for one set up so it devolves into three on three madness. So if you have the time this Saturday make sure to tune into VGBC and just enjoy, we can all be serious when Top 32 starts.

Also notable for Glitch 3 is the addition of "After Dark" events - things you wouldn't typically see at a Smash event, like Smash Tour. These will be fun side events for people to enjoy. Personally, I can't wait to wreck some people at Puyo Puyo Tetris.
