Matchup Tips

Neutral (1)

Bayonetta

Camping is your best friend in this matchup. Since Diddy's too small to be hit with long-lasting combos, your best bet is to play a hit-and-run style. As long as you have the percent lead, there isn't much of a reason to go in against him. Spacing with well-placed fairs and up/down tilts should be your bread-and-butter. When you do get a combo starter, don't go in too hard (unless their SDI is poor, in which case go ham). Get a couple aerials, then drift away and continue a camp-heavy game. Since Diddy's projectile game is poor, you will find success in staying out of banana range and using bullets. By forcing them to approach, you can then catch them with a powerful combo starter.

Of course, if you don't have percent lead (or the lead is very slight), then you'll have to find a way in. A patient Diddy will not continue to press the advantage, since he plays the matchup just like Bayo does. Your best bet is to keep chipping away at him bit by bit, not getting overly greedy.

Edgeguarding (1)

Bayonetta

Edgeguarding is Bayo's biggest strength in this matchup. Due to his very punishable up-b, Bayo can really put the hurt on an offstage Diddy. Holding bullets off of aerials is the best play for punishing it. Since he just sits there until his up-b is charged, a fastfall nair, held out, turns into a spinning Frisbee of death. Up air can work just as well, if not better, for this same task.

For punishing Monkey Flip, it depends on the height. If they side-b below the stage, you can punish with the same plan as before. If the side-b is used right at ledge level or just above it, you have two options. One is to punish with a simple nair or fair. The other is a higher risk for a higher reward: If you can read that they will do the kick of Monkey Flip, you can try to Witch Time it. The placement of this could lead to a down air or down smash kill at low percents. Lastly, if they side-b very high, your only options are up air or Witch Twist.

Stage choice (1)

Bayonetta

Your best stage in this matchup is Dreamland. The low ceilings are great for combos, the tri-platform layout benefits you more than him, and Whispy can mess with his banana ledge traps. Lylat is also a good pick, specifically because of the last point. It is quite tough for Diddy to set up banana on ledge with the fluctuation of the stage. Not to mention, Bayo is much better at recovering safely without getting, as they say, "Lylated" than Diddy.

On the other side of the coin, Final Destination is your worst bet. Diddy is great at walling you out, so the lack of platforms really hurt. The high ceiling and no platforms hurt combos immensely. If the Diddy is playing an optimal, patient game, running a game back is quite difficult on FD. Also, though this may just be me, I feel that Smashville is Bayo's second-worst stage in this matchup. The single platform yields similar problems as on FD, and he can use it better than you. Diddy even has a tricky technique on the moving platform: repetitively down tilting, locking you in place. If you feel comfortable on it, however, it still is an acceptable pick.

The stages I didn't specifically mention (Town and City and Battlefield) are fairly even. Unless you choose to go Smashville, one of these two stages will likely be your starter. After game 1, ban FD if you won, or choose DL or Lylat (whichever wasn't banned) as your counterpick.

Witch time (1)

Bayonetta

Witch Time should be used much more sparingly than in an average matchup. Since Diddy's main close-range attack is grab, you won't be able to get too many Witch Times. It can still be used, but since Diddy won't be going for too many aggressive options, you will probably miss more than you hit. The best option to hit a Witch Time against is his fair. Diddy players love shorthop fair, so if they're getting predictable, you can go for the counter. As for punishing when you do get it, it's pretty much just the same as with everyone else. Rack up damage, start a combo, or charge an up smash, depending on percent.
